  • Transforming Oral Screening with Ultrasonography

Digital Periodontal Measurements. Non-Invasive and Painless.

About Us

A new sound is coming to dentistry
The sound of progress

Who we are

Periosonics, Inc. is a dentistry SaaS company with AI/ML powered digital diagnostic services designed to detect oral disease and related dental problems much earlier.

We believe a large and disruptive business opportunity exists in replacing conventional screening methods with modern, ultrasonographic versions in general dentistry, periodontics, endodontics, and oral surgery.

How we started

The genesis of ultrasonographic oral screening is the use of similar ultrasonic technologies for measuring material thickness and length of corrosion detection and bolt tension in industrial applications. Also relevant are non-destructive testing of material anomalies in defense equipment, graphite laminates and rocket propellant.

The first recorded oral use was at the Naval Dental/Biomedical Research Institute where this technologywas applied when a 6-month submarine mission had to be scrubbed due to a sailor’s life-threatening periodontal disease, which cost the Navy millions of dollars, while almost costing the sailor his life.

What we do

We offer the first ultrasonographic screening and diagnostic probe that provides accurate, repeatable digital oral measurements for the early detection of periodontal disease.

We replace manual periodontal screening and diagnostic tool kits with safer, modern and more effective, FDA-cleared methods based on non-invasive, ultrasonographic technologies.

Your best smile, longer.

Our Value

Accuracy

Manual probing with metal picks has a pocket depth accuracy of 1mm +/- 2mm, mostly based on hygienist proficiency. This data is not accurate enough to identify patients with elevated risk for oral disease, or to track disease progression/regression.  Periosonic probing offers digital oral measurements that are consistent and repeatable with accuracy up to 1mm +/- 0.1mm.

Non-invasive

The metal picks used in today's manual probing (the ADA standard) have not changed since they were invented 88 years ago. Manual probing can be painful to the patient and damage gum tissues.  By comparison, Periosonic probing is non-invasive, does not damage tissue and provides data on subgingival calculus, tooth fractures, bone loss, and other conditions not available through conventional diagnostic technologies.

Simplicity

Manual probing often requires two clinicians; one to do the measurements and one to enter the data, or one clinician who records their own pocket depths verbally, and enters them into their office dental system later.  Since Periosonic Probing is fully digital and cloud-based, the pocket depth measurements can instantly flow into dental office systems, to the systems of insurance companies or directly into the patient's mobile app.

How Periosonics helps

Ultrasonography-Based

Ultrasound is one of the safest medical technologies in the world, adopted globally for pregnancy screening and understanding fetus health. We believe it is the perfect screening technology for oral health too. Since ultrasonographic oral screening is completely safe, it can be performed multiple times a year to track and report periodontal health consistently and accurately.

Soft and Hard Tissue

Ultrasonography is well suited for dental screening and diagnostics. High frequency acoustic waves can accurately see anatomical detail in soft tissue, while low frequency waves can see anatomical detail in teeth and bone.

Artificial Intelligence

Our machine learning can read our probe's ultrasonographic images accurately, quickly, and consistently to make landmark oral measurements fast. Our AI/ML models can safely identify a broader range of anatomical structures and details for both soft and hard tissue than conventional dental technologies.

The Benefits

Hygienists

With faster, more accurate probing, you'll spend less time making oral measurements and more time helping your patients be healthy and well.

Clinicians

Frequent, non-invasive screenings with digital measurements can increase oral health assessment and drive higher treatment acceptance.  Higher patient treatment acceptance will drive more practice revenue.

Patients

Safe, painless and more frequent screenings can detect gum disease earlier. Earlier screenings, diagnosis and treatment means less oral disease later and less tooth loss.
